Doing Things Properly
Starting your own business is something a lot of people talk about, but far fewer actually do. For me, it wasn’t about becoming a business owner or chasing some grand plan. It was about wanting to do things properly.
Having worked in the electrical and roofing industries, I’d seen first-hand how projects were often approached. In many cases, the people designing systems weren’t the same people installing them, and the people speaking to customers weren’t always the ones carrying out the work. Somewhere along the way, the focus could shift away from the customer and the quality of the installation.
Building a Business Around Better Standards
I wanted to build a business that worked differently.
From day one, the aim was simple. Provide honest advice, carry out quality work and make sure every customer receives a system that’s genuinely right for their property. That might sound obvious, but in any industry there can be a temptation to focus on sales rather than outcomes. I’ve always believed the right approach is to focus on doing a good job and letting that speak for itself.
Why Renewable Energy Needs a Proper Approach
As renewable energy technologies have become more popular, that belief has only become more important. Solar panels, battery storage and EV charging systems can offer significant benefits, but they aren’t one-size-fits-all solutions. Every property is different, every household uses energy differently and every customer has different goals.
That’s why we start every project with a proper survey. We take the time to understand the property, the electrical setup and what the customer wants to achieve before making any recommendations. If we don’t think something is suitable, we’ll say so. It might not always be the easiest route, but it’s the one that allows us to sleep at night.
Staying Owner-Led
One of the things I’m most proud of is that we’re still an owner-led business. The person carrying out the survey understands the installation process. The person discussing the options understands how the system will actually work in the real world. That connection helps us provide better advice and better results for our customers.
Of course, running your own business comes with challenges. There are long days, unexpected problems and plenty of responsibility. But there’s also a huge amount of satisfaction in seeing a project completed properly and knowing you’ve helped a homeowner make a positive long-term investment in their property.
What Still Drives Us Today
Today, Solar Source continues to grow, but the principles remain exactly the same. Honest advice. Quality workmanship. Systems designed around the customer rather than a sales target.
That’s why I started the business, and it’s still what drives us today.
